Why You Should Sleep on Your Left Side?

We all know that sleep is very important for overall health. Your body can`t function normally without a good night`s sleep. Lack of sleep can cause many diseases and it`s one of the biggest factors associated with heart disease. The left side of sleeping may not be suitable in some cases. It`s not recommended for those who have had heart troubles in the past.

Here are the health benefits of left side sleeping:

  1. Better elimination of waste products

The gravitational forces, when you sleep on your left side, make it easy for the food to move from the small intestine to the large intestine. So the waste from the large intestine dumps into the colon gradually and slowly. This makes the colon to be ready to eliminate waste, properly and easily the next morning.

  1. Better Sleep During Pregnancy

A left-sided sleeping position can prevent the liver from applying pressure on the uterus and promote blood circulation to it, along with improved blood flow to the fetus. In pregnant women, also, relieve the back pain.

  1. Relieve back pain

People with chronic back pain must not, and cannot sleep on their backs. It`s probably uncomfortable. Sleeping on your left side can release the pressure on the spine and also reduces back pain.

  1. Better digestion

We all know that the pancreas and the stomach make the digestive enzymes in your body, to help the digestion. When you sleep on the left side, the stomach and pancreas hang comfortably and have adequate space to carry out digestion. The gravity allows the food to move through the stomach in a gradual manner and the pancreatic enzymes to release gradually, as needed.

When you sleep on the right side, these organs are in an uncomfortable position. That often makes the food and enzymes empty into the stomach all at once, causing discomfort and disrupted digestion.

  1. Reduce heartburn

Left side sleeping can help you to reduce acid reflux and clear out the existing acid. If, you sleep on the wrong side, can allow the acid to enter the esophagus. This causes heartburn, because our stomach is situated on the left side of the body.

NOTE: If you feel heartburn after eating, you can even try lying down on your left side for a 10 minutes for relief.

  1. Relieves Varicose Veins

Left side sleeping is recommended for those who have problems with varicose veins.

It`s beneficial because it helps take pressure off a large vein  which is located on the right side of the body.
